This one hour event will outline from start to finish the steps required to make changes to the occupational therapy practice act in the state of Tennessee. The presenters will detail the pathways a bill follows once entered into the legislative system, the persons involved in this process, and estimated timeline of events. The event will open with a presentation and conclude with Q&As from attendees.

Learning objectives
After completion of this occupational therapy continuing education course, participants will be able to:
  • Arrange the steps for making changes to the practice act in correct order
  • Summarize an estimated timeline for making changes to the practice act
  • List at least one way they can be involved in the process of making changes to the practice act
  • Recall how to track a bill while it moves through the legislative system

Cassie Howe is a third year occupational therapy doctoral student at Belmont University. She completed her undergraduate degree in psychology at Ball State University. Prior to enrolling in OT school she worked as a day services program coordinator for a non-profit that provides services for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Following graduation from Belmont University Mrs. Howe has accepted a position as a pediatric therapist in Manhattan, KS. While attending Belmont University she has served as one of two class representatives, interview day ambassador, a student representative at the Meharry-Vanderbilt Interprofessional Education alliance, and is a member of BSOTA and Pi Theta Epsilon. Cassie is passionate about community access/involvement for adults and children with IDD and advocating for OT via involvement in state organizations.
Dr. Cindy DeRuiter Blackwell, OTD, OTR/L

Dr. Cindy DeRuiter Blackwell is the president of TNOTA. She obtained her Master's and Post-Professional Doctorate from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Blackwell is a pediatric OT practitioner who has worked in outpatient settings, pediatrics, early intervention, home health, and academia. She is the Director of Medical Services at Project Play Therapy. Dr. Blackwell is passionate about disability rights, advocacy on behalf of the OT community, and empowering the next generation of OT practitioners.

In order to receive the certificate of completion, participants must meet ALL of the following criteria:
  • Complete payment or TNOTA membership log in for course enrollment
  • Attend the live webinar for the full duration
  • Complete the Attendance Attestation exam with a 100% score
  • Pass the course exam with a score of 80% or greater
Please note that no credit or certificate will be issued unless all criteria is met.  Partial credit will not be issued.  
cancellation policy
Live Courses and Webinars
Learner cancellations: In the event that the learner requests to cancel or is unable to attend a course, a refund for the total paid for the course will be granted if Aspire OT is notified via email at info@aspireot.us within 10 business days prior to date of the scheduled course, minus a non-refundable registration fee of 25% of registration price.  If the learner provides notification of cancellation less then 10 business days prior to the scheduled course, the learner will be offered the opportunity to attend the same webinar on an alternate date or enrollment in the recorded on-demand version of that webinar, instead of a refund.  

No refunds will be issued after a course has been attended for more than 30 minutes.  Partial credit will not be issued.  

Provider cancellations: In the event of inclement weather or other event resulting in the inability for a live course to be provided within the scheduled time, learners will be offered an alternate date or a full refund for registration paid.
On-Demand web Courses 
Web courses will remain available to learners for 1 year. No refunds will be available for web courses that have been attended or viewed for greater than 30 minutes. In the event of a refund, the learner will be unenrolled in the course immediately upon issuance of a refund. No refunds will be issued for any course in which a certificate has been issued.
