This course examines the role of occupational therapy in the prevention, identification, and management of delirium in the intensive care unit (ICU) and across the recovery continuum. Learners will explore the clinical presentation and impact of delirium on occupational performance, with an emphasis on evidence-informed, occupation-based assessment and intervention strategies. Standardized tools, including delirium screening and cognitive assessments, will be used to support clinical/professional reasoning and guide intervention planning.

Learners will explore the clinical presentation and impact of delirium on occupational performance, with an emphasis on evidence-informed, occupation-based assessment and intervention strategies. Standardized tools, including delirium screening and cognitive assessments, will be used to support clinical/professional reasoning and guide intervention planning.
Through real-life patient scenarios and case-based learning, participants will apply strategies such as early mobilization, sensory modulation, environmental adaptation, and engagement in meaningful occupation to support cognitive and functional recovery. The course also addresses transition to post-ICU care, including cognitive screening and ongoing occupational therapy intervention following delirium resolution.
Designed for occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants and students, this course strengthens clinical /professional reasoning and supports interprofessional collaboration in critical care while reinforcing the central role of occupation in ICU delirium care and recovery.
