Occupational Therapy Practitioners (OTP) across settings are increasingly recognizing the importance of utilizing a trauma sensitive lens in practice. In acute, inpatient, and outpatient adult settings it is highly likely that the majority of clients served by OTPs will have experiences of acute and chronic trauma experienced at any point in the lifespan (Ellis et al., 2022; Atchison & Suarez, 2021). The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration provides a helpful guide to implementing a trauma informed approach to care (SAMHSA, 2014). In this presentation, Rachel Ashcraft, a co-editor of the AOTA published textbook “Trauma, Occupation, and Participation” shares practical tips to consider that combines the SAMHSA Trauma Informed Principles with OT practice guidelines. This continued education event will be applicable for occupational therapy practitioners in adult inpatient and outpatient settings.
