Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) participate in the community less than typically developing
children. Pre-visit materials (social stories, accessibility maps, and communication books) can increase
community engagement. This research took place in collaboration with the Grand Rapids Public Museum
(GRPM). The researchers developed pre-visit materials and gathered feedback on their usefulness from
caregivers of children with ASD. Twenty-two families participated. Reported benefits include preparation,
avoiding overstimulation, and enhanced communication. Suggestions for improvement include providing
multiple formats (audio, video, multiple languages). Study findings can assist in providing a more engaging
museum experience for children with ASD and their families.
