People with disabilities face persistent and multifaceted barriers when accessing healthcare. This presentation explores the systemic, physical, and interpersonal obstacles that limit equitable care for disabled individuals. Topics include appointment structures that fail to allow adequate time, physical inaccessibility, complex healthcare navigation systems, and limited availability of knowledgeable providers. We will also briefly examine how healthcare benefit design, crisis standards of care, and frameworks such as Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALYs) can reinforce systemic exclusion.
Additionally, this presentation provides insight from the lived experiences of individuals with disabilities and the barriers that they face when accessing the healthcare system. Attitudes and assumptions held by healthcare professionals often contribute to a power imbalance, where patients’ voices are marginalized, and their needs are unmet.
Practical strategies for improvement will be presented to help mitigate barriers that can be implemented across healthcare settings as suggested by current research, standards of care and the disability community. Resources will be provided to facilitate advocacy and help our patients lessen the barriers that they face.
Target Audience: Occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, occupational therapy students
Presented by: Ashley Hankin, OTR/L
