This course invites a view of therapy through the caregiver’s eyes. Participants will explore client-centered approaches to investigate caregiver/client hidden barriers to engagement. OTs and OTAs will learn how warmly empowering families, use of compassionate care and coaching improves therapy outcomes, relationships and engagement in the triad of caregiver-client-therapist. Using a universal design approach at the family’s own pace, practitioners will learn how to engage and include families in problem solving and collaboration in clinical therapy, school and home settings. Therapists will hear first-person experiences of successful methods when working with family trauma and other issues related to caregiving children and young adults with complex medical and behavioral issues. Presented by an OT and parent of a young adult with high support needs, this course will give perspectives and stories to help frame your family collaborations.
Target Audience: Occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, occupational therapy students
