This course invites occupational therapy practitioners to reflect on their own experiences with self-regulation, modulation, and sensory processing to enhance their ability to assess and support pediatric clients in everyday functional activities. Participants will explore how nervous system function, trauma, disability, and physiological factors influence the ability of individuals o maintain regulation and achieve homeostasis.

The course will also emphasize the importance of considering pediatric clients' diverse cultural backgrounds and personal experiences during assessment. Collaboration with caregivers and schools will be highlighted as crucial for evaluation and treatment, with a focus on understanding each pediatric client's unique “story” to provide context for behaviors related to neurological and sensory processing.

Target Audience: Occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, occupational therapy students
This occupational therapy continuing education course uses the following instructional methods: visual aides (ie slides), discussion board, case study examples, and learning, and practice opportunities.

After completing this course, participants will be able to:
  • Identify two examples of their own sensory processing preferences and self-regulation strategies through self-reflection upon completing the course.
  • Identify three nervous system-based visual cues that indicate distress, overwhelm, or disorganized states in pediatric clients and consider how client disability may impact these.
  • Explain trauma-based sensory dysfunction and the importance of knowing pediatric client “stories” and teaming with caregivers and others.
