This is the first in a two-series of courses focused on trauma-informed care for the OT practitioner.

Trauma affects all areas and contexts outlined in the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process, Fourth Edition. Individuals who have experienced trauma may face challenges in social participation, daily activities, and beyond. Trauma influences not only the person but also their interactions within all domains

This course will introduce OTs, OTAs and students to trauma and provide essential knowledge needed to recognize and understand trauma within their practice. This course emphasizes the importance of trauma awareness in occupational therapy without focusing on treatment interventions. Instead, it equips practitioners with the knowledge to observe and understand how trauma manifests and affects their clients' occupational engagement. This understanding is crucial for creating a supportive and informed therapeutic environment, ultimately enhancing the overall effectiveness of occupational therapy practice. The second course in this series will focus on trauma-informed care including assessment and treatment.

Target Audience: Occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, occupational therapy students
This occupational therapy continuing education course uses the following instructional methods: visual aides (ie slides), discussion board, guided note taking, and learning, and practice opportunities.
Content disclosure: This course does not exclusively focus on any specific product or service.

OT Student Course Participant

"I really appreciated her in depth information about the ACEs. I have extensively treated over 1000 adult patients with a history of trauma, and other practitioners and I spent very limited time, if any, focusing on ACEs."
